Alcaraz stops Sinner and repeats the final in Indian Wells

The Spaniard returned to the best tennis player of 2024 after a three-hour break due to rain

MADRID, 17 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) this Saturday the Italian Jannik Sinner to reach the final of the Indian Wells tournament for the second year in a row, the first Masters 1,000 of the season, a semifinal clash who was detained for more than three hours and with which he defended the number two in the world.

Alcaraz saved the defense of the title in the Californian desert, which he will try to seal in the final against the American Tommy Paul or the Russian Daniil Medvedev, with another declaration of intentions. The Murcian knocked down a Sinner who had won the first set with authority and stopped the best tennis player of 2024, who was 16-0 until he ran into an Alcaraz who wants to be the best again.

The Murcian had to overcome a tough start. On the one hand, three hours of suspension due to rain, this time not bees like in the quarterfinals, but a long break after barely having played three games (1-2). On the other hand, the current champion had to stop a Sinner who shone with a 1-6 and seemed intractable again, as he had done since winning the Australian Open.

The Italian hit him hard and won almost every exchange, solid from the back of the court and with a much more accurate serve than his rival. For Alcaraz, the start and then the restart of the match left errors and only one moment of optimism, a break ball in the fifth game that disappeared as quickly as the set.

Later, as his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero asked him, the one from El Palmar changed tactics and left the Italian’s devilish rhythm. Thus, Sinner stopped marking the match with his blows and Alcaraz had options to recover his game and take it from him, until he broke his rival in the fourth game. The income was enough to force the third round where the script ended up changing.

The Spaniard, who had been demonstrating his best tennis of the year, reached cruising speed with incredible points to knock down Sinner’s resistance with two breaks in a row. The champion put one more gear and left the Italian behind, in the greatest modern rivalry on the ATP Circuit, to see himself in a new final from Cincinnati, hungry to become champion as he has not achieved since Wimbledon.
