Alcaraz: “I hope I can overcome what I did last year”

The tennis player Carlos Alcaraz assured this Friday that his goal at the Australian Open is to “surpass” last year’s result at the tournament, at the same time that he recognized that 2021 was a “great year” for “everything achieved and lived”.

“I hope I can top what he did last year. Starting from third, fourth round would be a good result.”Alcaraz told Eurosport about the Australian Open.

The young tennis player, who will debut in Melbourne against a player from the qualifying phase, explained that the trip to Australia is “hard”, because “there are many hours by plane and the time change is also strong”. “It was difficult for me to adapt to the schedule and the heat, but I have had several good training sessions and I can say that I am adapted”, he pointed.

“What I like most about Australia is the weather, although it’s hard to play in such heat, I like to play in the summer”, he added regarding the weather conditions that will be found in the tournament.

Alcaraz, who will start the season as number 33 in the ATP ranking, also took stock of his “great” 2021. “I fulfilled my goals. You can’t think about everything you’re going through, but being at home and after finishing the year you have those thoughts of all that you have achieved and lived, I really want to start 2022,” he said, setting himself the goal of “finishing in the Top 15 and fighting for the ATP Finals.”

Finally, the tennis player highlighted the unity in Spanish tennis. “We are all united. I get along very well with Carreño, because we coincide more in the academy, and with other Spaniards. Spain has great players, we encourage each other“, he concluded.
