Alcaraz goes back to Berrettini and gets into the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time

The Murcian meets the Danish Holger Rune

MADRID, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has sealed his pass to the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament, the third ‘Grand Slam’ of the season and the only one on grass, after coming back on Monday from his match against the Italian Matteo Berrettini (3-6, 6 -3, 6-3, 6-3), and will seek the semifinals against the Danish Holger Rune.

The Murcian, number one in the world, remained calm and went from less to more to sneak into the quarterfinals for the first time with the ‘big’ Londoner after three hours and five minutes of fighting with the transalpine, number 38 in the world.

In a new appointment with the All England Club central office, the man from El Palmar was about to surprise the Italian in the opening game, who saved the danger by neutralizing the two ‘break’ balls available to the world number one , who also blew another in the seventh game.

Berrettini, on the other hand, did take advantage of the opportunity that the eighth offered him, breaking the Murcian’s serve to, with his serve and the second, take the set in his favor after almost three-quarters of an hour of play.

The blow did not distract Alcaraz, who made use of a single break, in a fourth game that closed blankly, to equalize the contest in a second set that ended with a feint left. With confidence skyrocketing, his performance rose in the third set, which started 3-1 before breaking again in the ninth game.

The balance marked the start of the fourth quarter, interrupted at 2-2 to close the ceiling at the request of the Italian, who insisted that he did not see the ball well. A ‘break’ in the eighth game paved the way for the Spaniard, who had to wait for his fourth ‘match point’ to settle the clash after just over three hours.

Now, he will meet in the quarterfinals with the sixth favorite of the British tournament, the Danish Holger Rune, who defeated the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (3-6, 7-6 (6), 7- 6(4), 6-3).

Both tennis players have met twice, both 20 years old, with a victory for each one; Alcaraz prevailed at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals (4-3(6), 4-2, 4-0), while Rune took the quarterfinal match of the Masters 1,000 in Paris last year due to withdrawal due to injury from Murcia (6-3, 6-6).
