AL Notes: White Sox, Tigers, Orioles, Angels, Astros

AL Notes: White Sox, Tigers, Orioles, Angels, Astros

Although Dusty Baker’s career as a manager may be over, he still has a position in the Astros administrative staff whenever he wants it. Reporters were informed by Astros owner Jim Crane that Baker is “always welcome” in the team.

The veteran captain announced that he is “retiring from the field” in the interim, but he hasn’t decided what will happen next.

Ausmus was a candidate for both the 2020 managerial opportunity and the Astros general manager post during the previous summer.

To replace Baker as manager, the Astros are now in the early stages of their hiring process. Former Tigers then Angels manager Brad Ausmus, along with bench coach Joe Espada, are “strong candidates,” according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Espada was a candidate in the previous managerial search conducted by the team, and in the intervening years, he has conducted countless interviews for managing positions.

Additionally, McTaggart named a number of candidates for the position, including Jeff Banister, the bench coach for the Diamondbacks, Ausmus, and Espada.

As first reported by Ken Rosenthal as well as Sam Blum of The Athletic, Matt Wise has taken a new position as the White Sox’s bullpen coach after serving as pitching coach for three of the team’s four years as a coach with the Angels.

Although it might seem like an inch backward, Wise was essentially a sitting duck in the Angels organization when he moved from pitching coach to bullpen coach.

Lastly, the Orioles in the AL East made some adjustments to their player development and scouting departments.

After splitting with Phil Nevin, Los Angeles is searching for a new manager, who will probably want to choose his own coaching staff.

Meanwhile, the Tigers require a new first-base manager. The Detroit Free Press’s Evan Petzold reports that Alfredo Amézaga will not be back on A.J. Hinch’s coaching staff for the upcoming campaign.

He was a minor league coach with the Braves organization before joining the staff prior of the 2023 season. Amézaga manages teams in the Mexican January League as well.

Twelve front office employees were promoted to new positions. These positions include director of player development Anthony Villa, new vice president of operations and international scouting Koby Perez, and new vice presidents of player development Matt Blood.

Prior to this, Perez was director of foreign scouting and Blood was director of player development. In 2023, Villa served as a minor league hitting coordinator.

The squad announced the Dave Trembley will return as manager for the upcoming season just hours after his team let up a modern-day record thirty runs in a single game.

On June 18, Trembley took over for Sam Perlozzo, and on July 31, he was awarded the position for the remainder of the campaign.

He added that he has a club option for 2009 and that his contract has been extended through the 2008 season. With Trembley in place, the Orioles are 29–26.

Due to a right shoulder ailment that has plagued him for over a month, DH Gary Sheffield will likely be out of the lineup for at least five days.

Sheffield remarked, “It’s too bad to play with right now.” It’s at its most agitated point ever. This is the last cortisone shot I will ever need.” He stated he may be added to the list of disabled.

With 10 RBIs on four extra-base hits in Tuesday’s 18-9 victory over the Yankees, left fielder Garret Anderson became just the 12th player in big league history—and the sixth since 1969—to reach double digits in RBIs in a single game. He scored three runs with a home run, three more with four doubles, and grand slams.
