Al-Khelaifi’s obsession with the Champions League has already exceeded 1.4 billion

Champions League. That is the competition that Nasser Al-Khelaifi has had between his eyebrows since he became president of Paris Saint Germain, back in 2011. Since then, the Parisian team has only reached one final, the one they lost to Bayern Munich ago two seasons. The rest have been accumulating failure after failure, the last in the tie against Real Madrid, after investing more than 1,405.6 million euros in signings, at an average of 128 ‘kilos’ per campaign.

In his first season at the helm of PSG, 2011-12, the club spent 107.1 million on transfers, while selling for 9.4 million. In 2012-13 he invested 151 ‘kilos’ and sold for only 4.75. In the following, the 13-14, an expense of 135.9 million was made, for the 26.5 million in sales. The trend continued its course and in 2014-15 he returned to spend more than he entered due to the departure of players, 49.5 million compared to only 2.20 for sales.

In 2015-16, Al-Khelaifi invested 116.1 million euros and sold for only 22.9. A season later, in 17-18, was when the largest financial outlay was made in terms of transfers, with 238 million euros, 222 of which belonged to the purchase of Neymar Jr., while 98.4 million were generated in sales. In 18-19, 227 million were spent, for the 114 in player departures.

2019-20 is the only season since Al-Khelaifi became PSG president in which sales revenues outstripped transfers. And curiously, it was the best in terms of results, since it won everything in France and also reached the Champions League final. He sold for 105.9 ‘kilos’ while he bought for 95. In 20-21 he spent 62 million, the season he invested the least in signings, and sold for 0.4. Finally, in the present, with Leo Messi at the head of his project, he spent 89.5 million and earned 11 for the departure of players.

In his 10 participations in the Champions League he fell 4 times in the round of 16, 4 in the quarterfinals, 1 in the semis and 1 in the final

In total, PSG have bought for a value of 1,405.6 million euros, while they have sold for a value of 455.25, which makes a balance of 950.35 million euros. All this economic waste translates into 8 league titles, out of 11 possible (counting on the fact that he is champion this season, something that is within reach), 6 French Cups and 6 League Cups.

In the Champions League, his greatest obsession and the main reason why he took charge of PSG, his greatest achievement was reaching the final. In the rest of his participations, four times he has fallen in the round of 16, the same in the quarterfinals and only once was he defeated in the semifinals.

Of all his signings, the most expensive has been Neymar Jr., with 222 million, followed by Kylian Mbappé, 145 million, and Achraf Hakimi, 66.5. Instead, the highest sales correspond to players like Guedes, 40 million, David Luiz, 35, and Lucas Moura, 28.4 million.
