Al-Khelaïfi, reelected as president of the ECA

Soriano, CEO of Manchester City, elected member of the ECA board of directors

The president of the Royal Society, Jokin Aperribay, in the Executive Committee of the organization

MADRID, 7 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of PSG, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, has been re-elected this Thursday as president of the European Club Association (ECA), a body that also includes the president of Real Sociedad, Jokin Aperribay, and the CEO of Manchester City, Ferran Soriano, according to the 30th General Assembly of the entity held in Berlin (Germany).

The German city hosted the ECA meeting, in which its leaders would be elected for the next cycle, until 2027. No surprises, Al-Khelaïfi will continue to lead an organization that will also have a Spanish presence.

Thus, Real Sociedad has joined the Executive Committee of the ECA, where it will seek to “safeguard, strengthen and develop the interests of European clubs and international football decision-making,” according to the Basque team’s statement. The club will be represented on the entity’s board of directors through its president, Aperribay, thus confirming its existing candidacy in Subdivision 1 to join said committee.

In addition, the presence of the current European champion in the body continues to grow, with the executive director, Ferran Soriano, 56, as one of the seven European club managers chosen to form part of the ECA board of directors. His election coincides with the moment in which the ‘citizen’ club faces 115 accusations from the Premier League related to alleged breaches of its financial regulations.

In addition, Al-Khelaïfi will be accompanied at UEFA by the CEO of Atlético de Madrid, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, since the rojiblanco president will become a member of the UEFA Executive Committee. His presence in the governing body of European football will be guaranteed until 2027, after the mattress club disassociated itself from the Super League project, of which it was a founder together with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, among others.

All these appointments seek to strengthen UEFA and the ECA against the European Super League project, something that both organizations already made clear this Wednesday, by signing a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that extends their cooperation until the year 2030. Its purpose is to “strengthen the long-term stability and sustainable growth” of the ‘Old Continent’, counteracting the plans still in force to create this new competition.
