“Irene’s elbow to the head, that of a lifetime is a foul”
MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The midfielder of the Spanish team Aitana Bonmatí acknowledged “anger” and “frustration” for staying out of Euro 2022 but “pride” also for Spain’s performance in the quarterfinals, being better than England.
“I would like to say that I am proud of what has been done today on the field. Everyone thought that six were going to fall on us, we have spoken on the field and we have done wonderfully,” she said in statements to TVE, collected by Europa Press, after losing 2-1 in extra time.
“I have a bit of frustration, anger, having been better and you stay out of the European Championship. Our goal was to make history, reach the semi-finals for the first time, go far. This remains inside to catch what comes with more force. Give thanks to the whole group for what they have done on the pitch and to everyone who has been supporting us”, he added.
Aitana, one of the best players in the match, lamented the missed opportunity and also pointed to the controversy over the foul they claimed against Irene Paredes in the 1-1 draw against England. “I am proud but also frustrated, with a bit of anger. We have played a very good game. We have attacked quite well, we have had chances, but small details leave you out”, she pointed out.
“There are things that do not depend on us. I do not want to enter into controversy, but we are angry for things that we do not deserve. From my point of view that is a fault. You take the elbow to Irene’s head and that of a lifetime It’s a foul. What I say won’t change the result, I just have to keep the positive, which is that we’ve been better on the pitch and it’s going to help us go far,” he added.
“I’m not satisfied with this, we deserve and we can go much further. Playing such big games, like when we played the Champions League, makes you grow, gain international experience, that’s going to make you reach your maximum performance. I’m young, the years pass quickly, but I know that I have no ceiling, I want to be much better than the version I have given this European, you learn from everything”, he concluded.
