Aitana Bonmatí and five other Spaniards, nominated for the Ballon d’Or 2023

Alba Redondo, Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo, Patricia Guijarro and Mapi León complete the representation of Spain on the list

Alexia Putellas, winner of the award in 2021 and 2022, absent this year after her very long knee injury

MADRID, 6 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish soccer players Aitana Bonmatí, Alba Redondo, Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo, Patricia Guijarro and Mapi León have been nominated this Wednesday for the Women’s Ballon d’Or 2023, according to the list of 30 players announced by the specialized magazine ‘France Football’, organizer of the prize.

In its fifth edition under the exclusive protection of this magazine published by ‘L’Équipe’, the women’s Ballon d’Or has gone from having 20 nominees to having 30. All this, in the wake of the recent World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, whose impact media across the planet has had no comparison with previous editions.

Aitana Bonmatí, the undisputed head of the World Cup-winning team, is one of the favorites to win this award. She was already nominated in 2022, an edition where the culé Alexia Putellas reigned, also winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2021; However, her very long knee injury has prevented her from being seen on the playing fields for many months, barely being nominated.

In the absence of Putellas, Bonmatí stood out even more both in the Spanish team and in FC Barcelona, acting as a beacon in the 2022/23 campaign to win the Women’s Champions League along with the domestic titles of Liga F and the Spanish Super Cup. The icing on the cake has been the World Cup title, completing a curriculum that last week earned her being chosen as UEFA Player of the Year.

Paralluelo, Guijarro and León, also from Blaugrana, wear these crowns at the club level as the main baggage for their nominations. However, Guijarro and León have not participated in the World Cup with Spain as they were one of the 15 players who gave up being called up due to disagreements with the RFEF and, especially, with the already deposed coach Jorge Vilda.

Olga Carmona, Real Madrid winger and heroine of the Spanish team in Sydney, is nominated along with another brand new world champion, the Levantine striker Alba Redondo. The Swedish striker Fridolina Rolfö and the English goalkeeper Mary Earps seem, a priori, like the great rivals of the Spanish soccer players for this Ballon d’Or.
