Agnes Jebet breaks the 10 kilometer world record in the 10K Valencia Ibercaja

Abdessamad Oukhelfen signs the Spanish men's record

MADRID, 14 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Kenyan athlete Agnes Jebet Ngetich broke the world record for 10 kilometers this Sunday, with a time of 28:46, during the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, where she also equaled the world record for five kilometres, while Abdessamad Oukhelfen signed the Spanish men's distance record.

In a spectacular test, Jebet became the first woman in history to go under 29 minutes in the ten kilometers, a feat in which she was accompanied by the second classified, her compatriot Emmaculate Anyango Achol, who crossed the finish line in 28:57 . The third athlete was Lilian Kasait, also from Kenya (29:32).

Jebet also achieved the women's 5K world record, equaling the mark of fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet (14:13). In this way, she destroys the reference mark that until now was held by the Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw, with 29:14, a time that she achieved in 2022 in Castellón. With this, the 10K Valencia Ibercaja achieves the double, since it also has the men's record of Rhonex Kipruto since 2020 (26:24).

“I'm very proud. Going under 29 minutes… I didn't expect to make this mark. The circuit is impressive, I came with the aim of improving my personal best. I'm very happy and now I'm already thinking about the Paris 2024 Olympic Games “, indicated Jebet.

For his part, Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo, current half marathon world record holder, was proclaimed winner of the men's race by completing the route through the city of Turia in 26:48. The podium was closed by the Bahraini Birhanu Balew (26:57) and the Kenyan Peter Mwaniki (26:59).

Meanwhile, Abdessamad Oukhelfen set the Spanish men's 10-kilometer record when he crossed the finish line with a time of 27:44, surpassing Toni Abadía's previous record from 2018 (27:47). The first Spanish finisher was Águeda Marqués (31:58).

“I want to thank Valencia, all its people and the public. After a difficult summer, today I have achieved an achievement with which I am very happy. I continue trying to improve in each training session ahead of the arrival of the Olympic Games” said Oukhelfen.

Sunday began with the 5K Valencia Vamos, the five-kilometer preliminary test that celebrated its second edition this year. The absolute winners were Mohamed Warsame and Manon Guillermín, who crossed the finish line in 14:32 and 15:59, respectively.
