The director of engineering at the team, Ayao Komatsu, commented that the Englishman “didn’t put a foot wrong” during his practice run in a Ferrari SF21 that was two years old as part of the preparation before his first race weekend debut.

He finished the session at 15th place, trailing his teammate Nico Hulkenberg by three spaces and 0.3 seconds. Hulkenberg is commemorating his 200th big prix in Mexico.

“I don’t think you can fault him,” said Komatsu. “I don’t think they can fault him.” “He has performed exceptionally well; all the way through through the very beginning preparation, he has been incredibly professional & very, very simple to work with.

“And then for each and every procedure, I don’t have anything negative to say about it. And today, with his composure, he grasped the goals of each and every run.

However, in regard to the input he provided, the interaction with his engineers was excellent. Excellent work in every respect. I am extremely impressed.

“He didn’t actually make a single step in the wrong direction. Because he didn’t make the most of the easy lap, the gap in time, and the fact that Nico’s lap wasn’t particularly impressive either, you can’t really take too much into it.

Sincerity compels me to admit that I am unable to point to a specific time throughout the preparation process when something annoying or tough occurred.

This includes his management. Working with him as well as his management team has been incredibly enjoyable, and the process itself has gone very smoothly.
