African Biniam Girmay makes history at Ghent-Wevelgem

MADRID, 27 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The 21-year-old Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), won the classic Ghent-Wevelgem this Sunday, the first African to win it, by beating Frenchman Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) in the sprint.

Girmay stood his ground in a four-rider breakaway, 24 kilometers from the finish, and in the fight for victory the last 250 meters managed to raise his arms in disbelief.

The young cyclist made himself known in the world showcase of a renowned event after the ascent to Kemmelberg and with a winning sprint to which neither Dries van Gestel (TotalEnergies) nor Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) responded.
