The Association of Spanish Soccer Players (AFE) paid tribute to Miguel Ángel González Suárez, legendary goalkeeper for Real Madrid and the Spanish team, at an event organized by the Luis de Carlos Forum of the Real Madrid Foundation, according to the union in a statement.
The president of AFE, David Aganzo, presented Miguel Ángel González with a trophy as a ‘Leyenda del futbol española’ accompanied by Fernando Zambrano, head of care for veteran soccer players from the Spanish soccer players’ union.
Nicknamed ‘El Gato’, Miguel Ángel announced last December that he suffers from ALS. “I know the way to go and that is what guides me and gives me strength. When I lose that strength, I rely on the love of my family and my friends,” he said.
Other Real Madrid legends were also present at the event, such as Emilio Butragueño, director of Institutional Relations for the white club, and José Martínez ‘Pirri’.
Miguel Ángel defended the Real Madrid shirt for 18 seasons, winning 8 Leagues, 5 Spanish Cups, 2 UEFA Cups and a League Cup. In addition, he started with the Spanish team in the World Cup played in Argentina in 1978 and added 18 caps.
