AFE opposes the Spanish Women’s Super Cup being played “in a country that does not respect women”

MADRID, 20 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has shown this Monday its “firm opposition” to the Spanish Women’s Super Cup being played “in a country that does not respect women” like Saudi Arabia, where the Men’s Super Cup is already being held.

“Given the possibility that the Spanish Women’s Super Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia in the future, the Association of Spanish Footballers expresses its firm opposition to this plan. Playing this tournament in that country would mean clearly whitewashing a regime that does not respect the rights of women,” he said in a statement.

Furthermore, the union revealed that it has maintained “contacts” in recent days with footballers from different F League teams, “expressing their opposition to playing the Spanish Super Cup in a country where women are discriminated against.” “The association is totally against the Spanish Women’s Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia, and makes legal means available to the footballers to defend their non-appearance if necessary,” he noted.

In this sense, he stressed that social rights must “prevail” over the economic aspect. “Justifying the dispute of the Spanish Women’s Super Cup in Saudi Arabia for mere economic reasons does not seem acceptable to us under any circumstances, above all other aspects must prevail, starting with respect for women,” he explained.

Finally, AFE condemned “the episodes suffered and reported by women of footballers, family members and fans in general” of RCD Mallorca during the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid in Jeddah. “The association is available to the affected footballers and their families to accompany them in any process they undertake in the face of such shameful and degrading acts,” he concluded.
