Aena foresees that airports will regain their pre-pandemic level in 2024 or 2025

The president of Aena, Maurici Lucena, believes that Spanish airports will not recover the levels of activity prior to the pandemic until 2024 or 2025.

Lucena participated this Saturday in the closing session of the XXVI Meeting of the Economy in S’Agaró, where he recalled that he has been president of Aena for three and a half years and that nothing could make him think that he would see such a brutal drop in air traffic because of the pandemic, according to EFE.

Once the worst of the health crisis has been overcome, one of Aena’s fundamental priorities, Lucena pointed out, is the recovery of activity, something that “is not as easy as it seems.”

And it is that, although in the last months the activity in the Spanish airports has recovered progressively, yesterday again was lived “an unfortunate day” due to the fear unleashed around the world by Ómicron, the new and worrying variant of the covid detected in South Africa.

Aena fell 8.8% on the stock market this Friday and some airlines, such as IAG, fell by more than 15%.

Maurici Lucena has attributed this collapse of the stock markets to an “overreaction” of the stock markets, but this indicates “clearly that there is significant uncertainty about the continuation of the recovery.”

Despite everything, the manager is “optimistic” and trusts that the airports in the Aena network will regain activity levels prior to the pandemic in 2024 or 2025.

Beyond the recovery of activity, Aena’s second great commitment in this new stage will be the promotion of digitization and innovation, which will allow it to be more efficient, offer better services and advance in sustainability, decarbonizing air transport .
