ADESP and Spanish athletes organize collection points to remove garbage from nature

MADRID, 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Sports Association (ADESP), the Spanish Sports Federations, clubs and athletes have mobilized in defense of the environment and have organized different collection points throughout the country this Saturday with the added objective of contributing data to a common base to characterize and typify the waste found at each cleaning point.

In Madrid, three Olympic athletes have been present: the walker Diego García, the canoeist Paco Cubelos and the rower Enrique Floriano. “The natural environment is our work environment as well and from Sports, we athletes have a responsibility towards it and we must take care of it,” said Diego García, current European runner-up in the 20-kilometre walk.

For his part, Paco Cubelos, medalist in several World Canoeing Championships, highlighted the importance of keeping rivers clean. “I train in rivers, swamps and in many other natural places. It is important to collect waste but we also have to be aware that it cannot be freely abandoned in the middle of our nature”, he pointed out.

Floriano, with nine medals in the Paralympic Games and currently representing the Spanish Rowing Federation, was also very aware of the initiative. “When I go out to train, I find numerous waterfowl entangled in plastics and it is clear that we all have a responsibility to fulfill with our environment. That is why from Sport we try to set an example to society”, he pointed out.

The action is framed within the LIBERA Project and its ‘1m2 against garbage’ campaign, of which ADESP is a part, promoted by SEO Birdlife in alliance with Ecoembes.
