A Uruguayan club auctions the ball from the 1974 World Cup final

The ball used in the 1974 World Cup final between the then Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands, giving the hosts their second title, will be auctioned off by a Uruguayan team.

A treasure for 25 years

According to the leader, the ball has belonged to the Uruguayan club that currently plays in the Second Division for 25 years after it was donated by its then-president, Ramón Barreto, who was line judge in that match and handed it over to the institution along with a statement certified by a notary.


The ball of the 74 World Cup final

Barreto was one of the attendees at the match that was played on July 7, 1974 at the Munich Olympic Stadium before more than 70,000 spectators.

That day the Germans, who had already won the 1954 World Cup, beat the then ‘oranje’ led by Rinus Michels, nicknamed the Clockwork Orange for their brilliance in the game and commanded by Johan Cruyff, 1-2.

In addition to that match, Barreto was also one of the assistants in the 1978 World Cup final in which César Luis Menotti’s Argentina beat the Netherlands 3-1.

Rampla Juniors currently aims to return to the highest category of Uruguayan soccer by working in its training divisions and in a multi-sport social club, Bianchi pointed out, so the money obtained in the auction will be invested in those priorities.

Born in 1914, the green and red jersey team won a Uruguayan championship during the amateur era and throughout its history had outstanding figures. One of them was the Argentine Ángel Amadeo Labruna, idol of River Plate.

On the other hand, it is one of the two teams that contributed players to the Uruguayan national team in the two Olympic Games (1924 and 1928) and the two World Cups (1930 and 1950) that La Celeste has won in its history.
