A Uruguayan club auctions the ball from the 1974 World Cup final

The ball used in the 1974 World Cup final between the then Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands, giving the hosts their second title, will be auctioned off by a Uruguayan team.

Daniel Bianchi, president of Rampla Juniors, confirmed this while stressing that the aforementioned auction will be international, although he did not clarify the country in which it will be held.

A treasure for 25 years

According to the leader, the ball has belonged to the Uruguayan club that currently plays in the Second Division for 25 years after it was donated by its then-president, Ramón Barreto, who was line judge in that match and handed it over to the institution along with a statement certified by a notary.

Barreto was one of the attendees at the match that was played on July 7, 1974 at the Munich Olympic Stadium before more than 70,000 spectators.

That day the Germans, who had already won the 1954 World Cup, beat the then ‘oranje’ led by Rinus Michels, nicknamed the Clockwork Orange for their brilliance in the game and commanded by Johan Cruyff, 1-2.

Gerd Müller decided the final

Defender Paul Breitner and attacker Gerd Müller scored the goals with which those led by Helmut Schön came back from 1-0 against, achieved by Johan Neeskens from a penalty, and won the second of the four World Cups that ‘Die Mannschaft’.

On the other hand, it is one of the two teams that contributed players to the Uruguayan national team in the two Olympic Games (1924 and 1928) and the two World Cups (1930 and 1950) that La Celeste has won in its history.
