During his speech at the Training Center of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), as reported by the CSD itself in a press release, Franco highlighted the importance of sport as “an active part in the collective effort that It is allowing the configuration of more just, capable, egalitarian and inclusive societies”.
“Sport is playing a key role in the development of societies, as it is an element that promotes, among other things, social evolution, territorial cohesion, inclusion and equality”, commented the Secretary of State for Sport, also paying attention to the values shared by the regions of Ibero-America and Europe to advocate establishing a “common agenda”.
“There is a shared will to provide common answers to the global challenges that are presented to us in the field of sport, through multilateral and collective action”, indicated the president of the CSD, reiterating his wish to strengthen the union between Europe and Latin America.
To this end, Franco has invited the governments of the region to participate in the Conference on Gender Equality in Sport, which will be held in Madrid on November 14 and 15, within the framework of the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union.
“In recent years, the fight for gender equality has become a value shared by Latin America and Europe. And it is that, in this tireless search for social justice, women cannot be left behind,” she remarked. In this sense, Franco praised the leadership of the CID in the development of public equality policies and praised the work of the Red Iberoamericana Mujer y Deporte.
“THE WORLD CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER TO ERADICATE THE EXISTING DISPARITIES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN”
“Ensuring that all women and girls can develop their full potential still requires, today, transformative changes that we are willing to address. With new laws, with transformative policies and with a broad vision, which guarantees the effective participation of women in sport (…) The world cannot wait any longer to eradicate the existing disparities between men and women”, he added.
The president of the CSD has explained, on the other hand, that “the Government of Spain wants to honor the historic progress that women have achieved and reaffirm its commitment to gender equality during the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union, in the second semester of this year.”
“Within this framework, an opportunity will be established to establish a political dialogue on gender equality, in which the Ibero-American region is called to participate,” he stressed. In that conference she will address women’s access to sport, the prevention of violence, female leadership, the professionalization of women’s sports and the visibility of women.
“We want this international forum to have the support and presence of the governments of the member countries of the European Union and Latin America, as well as prestigious international entities such as UNESCO, the UN or the Global Equality Observatory. Because together we can comply Sustainable Development Goal number 5, which establishes the goal of achieving real and effective equality between men and women”, Franco recalled.
