The US Open, the craziest Grand Slam in the last 14 years

Daniil Medvedev's victory over Novak Djokovic has once again shown why the US Open is the craziest Grand Slam of recent years on the men's circuit. And it is that Medvedev has become the ninth different tennis player to win the title in the men's category in the last 14 years on the hard court of Flushing Meadows, which still does not have a born dominator in recent seasons.

In these last 14 years, tennis players of the stature of Juan Martin del Potro in 2009, Andy Murray in 2012, Marin cilic in 2014, Stan wawrinka in 2016 and Dominic Thiem in 2020, in addition to the three tennis players from the Big Three: Roger Federer (has not won in New York since 2008), Novak Djokovic (2011,2015 and 2018) and Rafa Nadal, which with four titles in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019 has been the maximum dominator of the tournament at this time (he did not compete in the 2020 and 2021 editions, like Federer).

This distribution of titles in the US Open contrasts with what happened with the other three Grand Slam in the last 14 years, since in this period of time Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the Australian Open have only known four champions. In the case of Australian Open Djokovic has won the tournament 9 times (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2021) for three titles of Roger Federer (2010, 2017 and 2018), one of Rafael Nadal (2009) and another of Stan wawrinka (2014).

For its part, in Roland Garros Rafa Nadal has been the clear dominator of the tournament since 2008 with 10 titles (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020), while Djokovic has won 2 (2016 and 2021) and Federer and Wawrinka one each (2009 and 2015 respectively). Something similar happens in Wimbledon, as the All England Club has only met 4 different champions in the last 13 years: Novak Djokovic, with 6 titles (2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021), Roger Federer, with three (2009, 2012 and 2017), and Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray with two (2008 and 2010 in the case of the Spanish and 2013 and 2016 in the case of the British). It should be remembered that Wimbledon was not played in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Medvedev breaks another Djokovic stat

In addition, Djokovic's defeat to Medvedev breaks a statistic that the Serbian had immaculate: it is the first time that Djokovic has lost in a Grand Slam final against a tennis player looking for his first great. In fact, until yesterday he had a favorable balance of 7-0 (now 7-1) and three of those seven victories had been achieved this year: against Medvedev himself at the Australian Open; against Stefanos Tsitsipas at Roland Garros; and against Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon.
