Spain dethrones Italy on penalties and wins its third world crown

BARCELONA, 3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish men’s water polo team has been proclaimed this Sunday world champion for the third time in its history in the final of the 2022 Budapest World Cup, by beating Italy on penalties (9-9 (6-5)) and recovering from the three previous grand finals that they lost to the transalpines, including the one three years ago in Gwangju 2019.

Those of David Martín showed their claw to lead the world again 21 years later and achieve a glory that has eluded them in the most recent championships. The penalties decided after the tie in the match (9-9), but Eduardo Lorrio dressed as a hero to stop the last penalty against the Italian Cannella and dethrone the current world champions.
