BERLIN, 24 Sep. (dpa/EP) –
German side Schalke 04 have not ruled out offering Spaniard Raúl González their coaching position again following the departure of Karel Geraerts this past weekend, according to club director Ben Manga, who said the former striker “is a name that excites people” and that they as a club “maybe” could handle.
The former Real Madrid player played for the German club between 2010 and 2012, a period in which he played in the Champions League and scored 40 goals in the 97 games he played with the historic team that now plays in the second division in relegation positions, making him one of the fans’ favourites.
Raúl González is currently the coach of Real Madrid Castilla, which competes in the 1º RFEF, the third division of Spanish football, and last year he already rejected Schalke before Geraerts’ appointment.
“Since I’ve been here, I always hear his name whenever someone comes out,” manager Ben Manga told reporters. “Of course Raul is a name that excites people, it’s normal that they automatically think of that name, and maybe we do too. If we didn’t worry about the name, then you could say that he could have come, but we didn’t even bother with that,” he said.
