Rubén Martín: “The Cup is the most exciting tournament in Spain”

The Copa del Rey is played in streaming on DAZN. The platform covers a wide range of competitions including football, basketball, motorcycles and boxing. The journalist Rubén Martín (04-03-1982, Madrid), who humbly describes himself saying: “Life, television and radio have treated me much better than I deserve”, talks to AS about football, life and television .

How is the experience of narrating this Copa del Rey a single match?

Well, since last season I started narrating for DAZN. We still have the final of the Cup from last year pending, therefore this season is an incredible year to count the Cup. In addition to being a single match, there are two finals. And one sure is going to be the Basque derby. For me, the Cup is the most exciting tournament in Spain.

What makes the Cup different from other competitions?

It is a tournament without a net, whoever loses goes home. That is the bottom line. And that everything is equal to a game. A Segunda B team like Cornellá can be charged with the best LaLiga team, which is Atlético de Madrid. It is the competition in which David most times beats Goliath. With the change in format there are incredible matches. It is the opportunity for the smallest teams to get a Champions team and save the season. Those pretty images of modest dressing rooms holding a draw can only be seen at the Cup. This year without an audience is perhaps what we miss the most.

Streaming is almost taking over sports broadcasts, do you think viewers are already adapting to this mode?

I believe that streaming or platforms like DAZN are the present, not the future. A platform where you can watch the King's Cup, the Premier, the Italian Cup, motorcycles, the Euroleague … Anyone who is very crazy about sports, for 10 euros a month, has to get hooked. In addition, the quality of streaming is amazing, you see it in HD, in high definition.

And the future of television?

I think it is a model in which they will live together. Another thing is for example the new televisions that come with the applications. What used to be La 1, A3 for us … is now HBO, Netflix and DAZN. I don't think traditional TV will disappear in the short term, but it is evolving towards fiber, towards the internet.

The quality of the broadcasts is essential.

There is one thing about DAZN that I love and that makes me feel very comfortable and that is the importance they give to sound. One of the hallmarks is that “we are the sound of sport.” This year I did the English Super Cup and we listened to Arteta give Aubameyang instructions in Spanish … DAZN has turned the problem of there being no public in the stadiums, into an opportunity.

Did you imagine that you could dedicate yourself to narrating matches?

I couldn't imagine that I was going to be able to do these things because … I'm hopefully useless. Life has given me the opportunity to narrate and I have clung like Leonardo Di Caprio to the table (laughs).
