In June 2003, Florentino Pérez and his Board of Directors decided not to renew the contract with the Malaga native. One day after winning the League. The trigger for Hierro’s march could be the confrontation he had with Jorge Valdano at the end of the match against Athletic. Valdano reproached the central defender for the fact that the players did not comply with the planned protocol and refused to give an Olympic second round on the pitch to celebrate the recently won league title.
