Óscar Trejo reinvents himself with Iraola

The Argentine midfielder Óscar Trejo is starring in an excellent start to the season and the statistics reflect this, since in the eleven days that have been disputed he has given six goal passes – he is the second highest assistant in the championship – and has scored two goals.

“If Rayo lets Trejo escape he commits a sports murder,” said his former coach, Paco Jémez, on May 10, 2020, when the Argentine was pending to renew with the Madrid club.

“Trejo is a silent leader, a very important, key player.” This is how another of his coaches at Rayo described him, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, ‘Míchel’, now directing Girona.

In the return to Primera del Rayo, Óscar Trejo is shining with his own light. Of the eleven games in this League, he has participated in ten, all except one as a starter, and has played 677 minutes of play, in which he has given six assists and scored two goals.

At 33 years old, the Argentine midfielder is experiencing a second youth in the First Division, a category that he already tried with Rayo in the 2018-2019 season, in which his performance was below expectations and ended up spending more time on the bench than on the grass.

Trejo is enjoying Andoni Iraola and the Basque coach knows it. Last season, at the critical moment, he asked him to step forward and the Argentine, from less to more, responded by starring in an excellent end of the season, especially in the promotion matches against Leganés and Girona, which helped the team to rise to First.

In this campaign Trejo is assuming those captain stripes and, with the armband on his arm, he is knowing how to lead the team to capture Iraola’s tactical ideas on the pitch. The physical wear and tear proposed by the Basque coach, with a game of fast transitions and high pressure, is doing well for the Argentine, who is comfortable with his role in the team.

The alliance that it is having with the Colombian Radamel Falcao, as was clear against Barcelona, when one attended and another scored, is being one of the recurring tonic of this Ray, which is already the third highest scoring team in the category with 18 goals only behind Real Madrid (24) and Betis (19).

On a personal level, Trejo is knowing how to reinvent himself after several seasons in which his role was intermittent. The confidence that Iraola is giving him is reflected in his statistics, which reflect six assists, only one less than Frenchman Karim Benzema, who has seven with Real Madrid.
