Manchester United ties up their Champions League position with a win over Chelsea

MADRID, 25 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Manchester United achieved their mathematical classification for the 2023/24 Champions League this Thursday thanks to a 4-1 win over Chelsea FC, in a postponed game from matchday 32 of the Premier League, although the bad news for the ‘devils’ reds’ was the injury to their striker Antony Matheus in the right ankle.

At Old Trafford, the locals took the lead early on with an accurate header from Casemiro from a lateral free kick, thrown by Christian Eriksen into the heart of the area. The 2-0 was the work of Anthony Martial in the added time of the first half, pushing an assist from Jadon Sancho at will, and the 3-0 was scored by Bruno Fernandes from a penalty on 73′.

Marcus Rashford scored Manchester United’s fourth, in the 78th minute, after taking advantage of a chain failure from the rival defense; in the second instance, he beat the Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from below. And João Félix scored the goal of honor for Chelsea in the final stretch of the match, thanks to a nice counterattack.

In this way, the ‘red devils’ reached 72 points to provisionally place themselves in third position. Behind them, they have Newcastle with 70 points, so their places could still be exchanged in the 38th and final round of the championship. For its part, Chelsea remains depressed with 43 points in the middle of the table.
