Garbiñe Muguruza marries Arthur Borges, her New York ‘crush’

A very in love Garbiñe Muguruza29 years old, announces that he is getting married next year with Arthur Borges, a luxury firm manager whom he met in New York in the summer of 2021 in the most romantic way possible. Her love story began with a crush like the one in the syrup movies on Saturday afternoons. Girl meets boy near Central Park, they meet and fall in love.

The young Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player living in Geneva did not expect this script twist in her life. When Garbiñe already thought that love would not come to her easily due to the demands of being an elite athlete, and she said to herself “Well, it will be when it is”, life surprised her one day in August on the streets of New York.

Muguruza has told how he met Arthur to the magazine Hola, when she was in New York competing in the US Open and was bored in her hotel room near Central Park. Dressed in simple jeans, she went for a walk alone, “and on one of the streets I passed him and suddenly he turns and says ‘Good luck at the US Open’. I kept thinking, ‘What a boy so handsome!’, and from there we connected and went every day for a walk in Central Park”.

The former tennis number one describes her story as “Very romantic, really. It was really a crush at first sight. From the first moment we had an attraction and it was something totally unexpected that arose like that, meeting him on the street… and very pretty”.

The young manager at the time of the fashion division of the luxury firm Tom Ford was dressed in a suit, and upon recognizing the racket star, he timidly wished her luck while she thought, “Cool, hello, who are you?” So he asked her for a photo of her, and they took that selfie that they now have framed because it reflects the exact moment they met and fell in love.

Wedding for 2025 in Spain

Since then their love has only grown and consolidated. Arthur has moved to live in Geneva, where Garbiñe resides, which he follows and accompanies in all his professional commitments. On one of these trips, and again in the most romantic way imaginable, the young luxury professional, of Canarian and Finnish origin, proposed to the racket champion.

“It was very romantic and like a month ago. I was doing a couple of work things in Marbella and he asked me at the Hotel Marbella club, which is one of my favorites. It took me by surprise. He told me ‘Look pretty, what a let’s go to dinner.’ He prepared a small table for me under a tree… and when he proposed it to me, kneeling on the ground, I began to cry. I am very traditional and he is a true gentleman”.

They have not yet specified any details of what the wedding will be like, but the tennis player, who is taking time away from the competition to be able to be with her family and have a normal life that she longed for, wants it to be next year and in a area with sun and sea, in summer, and in Spain. She wants a small, family wedding, with a dress “that accentuates my figure, that’s why I’m an athlete, that is elegant but comfortable for dancing.

Garbiñe, however, wants to combine the preparation of the wedding with the return to the slopes at the end of this year. In her sports record there are still some titles that she would like to win, although she already has two Grand Slams, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He admits that as long as he continues playing, he doesn’t see himself having children: “I’m impressed by the difficulty of having a family and competing. I wouldn’t be able to, because the body changes a lot. The day I decide will be the day I don’t see myself playing anymore”, the tennis player has reasoned.
