Former Athletic Club player Jesús Renteria dies

The former Athletic Club player Jesús Renteria, who played for six seasons in the rojiblanco team and was responsible for the Lezama facilities, died on Sunday in Bilbao at the age of 87, the Basque club confirmed this Monday.

Basauri’s defender joined the Bilbao club in 1958 from Basconia. In six consecutive seasons, he played 68 games between the League and the Cup before signing for Recreativo de Huelva (1964-66) and ending his football career at Basconia in 1969.

In addition, for many years, Renteria was responsible for the rojiblancas facilities in Lezama, until in 2002 he curiously took over from another right-back, Santi Urkiaga.

“Not for that reason he stopped exercising a role of representation in the entity, since he was always active with the veterans. Renteria is especially remembered for his close relationship with former coach Howard Kendall, whom he sponsored on his arrival, and with the former lion Luis Mari Zugazaga.
