MADRID, 24 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Decathlon sports equipment design and distribution brand and the Spanish Bicycle Brands Association (AMBE) will develop joint strategies to encourage the growth of bicycle use.
Furthermore, under the common commitment to promote active and healthy mobility, both entities undertake to contribute to improving public health and the general well-being of cities through the promotion of healthy and active urban mobility.
The cycling sector is currently undergoing a transformation, with urban mobility taking on a special role.
In this sense, electric mobility is the one that is standing out the most, with it being estimated that by 2030 sales of electric bicycles will exceed those of conventional models.
In this context of change, Decathlon seeks to be a key player in this process, together with institutions and administrations, where health, safety and sustainability become the main drivers that promote the daily use of bicycles in cities, while promoting sports and performance cycling, forming part of the change in urban and transport dynamics.
“Decathlon’s incorporation into AMBE contributes to strengthening our work as the voice of the bicycle sector in Spain and boosting our work in promoting the bicycle as a means of transport, leisure, tourism and sport. It is an honour to have Decathlon as an associated company and we are convinced that the union of such diverse companies around this project, working together on a common mission, is already bearing fruit,” said Jesús Freire, Secretary General of AMBE.
Promoting bicycles as a more active, efficient and low-impact mode of transport will contribute to the decarbonisation of the transport sector, reduce urban traffic congestion and ensure access to a more active lifestyle, which will help improve cardiovascular health, physical endurance and general well-being of people.
Decathlon Spain’s sales director for cycling, Rubén Fernández, stressed that Decathlon and AMBE share a common vision: the transformation of urban mobility towards a more sustainable model that not only contributes to reducing environmental impact, but also promotes active and healthy mobility.
“Together, we will not only be able to share and develop common strategies that drive the growth of bicycle use, but also complement and strengthen the catalogue of solutions we offer to our clients,” added Fernández.
In this regard, Decathlon has just presented its European Plan for the Transition towards Sustainable Mobility, in which it undertakes to support the European Commission’s proposal for a European Declaration on Cycling and the development of regional sustainable mobility strategies; and to promote the rental, purchase of second-hand bicycles and the leasing of electric bicycles.
We also want to promote recycling, the circularity of critical materials, the development of batteries for electric bicycles, and contribute to improving the sector by creating alliances to facilitate the transition of jobs towards bicycle manufacturing.
Decathlon offers additional initiatives to its customers to facilitate the transition towards healthier mobility. From its Second Life service, which allows customers to buy and sell sports products that they no longer use, a complete workshop service to extend the useful life of products, to its MTB, trekking and urban bicycle rental service, both mechanical and electric, in all its stores, allowing citizens to access flexible and accessible solutions that adapt to their daily needs.
