Burkina Faso beats Cape Verde and dreams of the second round

Burkina Faso made up for the loss conceded on Sunday against host Cameroon in the opening match of the African Cup of Nations and today won an important victory against Cape Verde (1-0) at the Paul Biya stadium in Olembé, which relaunches its hopes of accessing to the round of 16.

The only goal of the game was scored by Hassane Bandé, in the 39th minute. It is the first as an international striker for Croatian Istra on loan from Ajax. Since the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, 10 of the 14 games played have finished 1-0.

After the first two days of group A, Cameroon has added the 6 points and has already secured its classification, while Burkina Faso and Cape Verde add three points. Ethiopia closes the table without having opened their locker by having conceded two defeats. The first two of the league will access the round of 16, as well as the four best third parties of the six groups.

Burkina Faso overcame the absences of several players after testing positive for Covid-19. Specifically, the captain Bertrand Traoré (Aston Villa), the defender Soumaila Ouattara, the midfielder Saidou Simporé and the forward Dango Ouattara. Against Cameroon (2-1) the coach Kamou Malo also had five casualties.

The game was decided by a run down the right by Issa Kabore, whose center took advantage of Hassane Bandé, who replaced Bertrand Traoré in the starting eleven, to beat Vozinha finishing off with his chest. The scoreboard did not move and Burkina Faso will play the classification on January 17 against Ethiopia.

The goal did justice to the greater ambition of Burkina Faso, who did more in attack against an opponent who hardly bothered them. Cape Verde has also been affected by Covid-19 and even its coach, Bubista, also affected, has not yet been able to travel to Cameroon.
