Five Barça players, Aitana Bonmati, Caroline Graham Hansen, Jennifer Hermoso, Lieke Martens and Alexia Putellas, are nominated for Best Soccer Player at the 2021 Globe Soccer Awards to be delivered on December 27 in Dubai. They will compete for the award with Lucy Bronze (Manchester City), Samantha Kerr and Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Megan Rapinoe (OL Reign) and Wendie Renard (Olympique Lyon). What’s more, Lluís Cortés, already in the Ukraine national team, is nominated for the best women’s soccer coach and FC Barcelona aspires to be the best women’s club, but not the men’s.
On the other hand, César Azpilicueta (Chelsea) is the only Spanish nominated for best player. Only one player currently playing for a Spanish club appears on the list, the French Karim Benzema, Real Madrid forward. Also on the list are Argentine Leo Messi, Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappe (PSG), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich, winner in 2020), Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) , among others.
Azpilicueta also among the candidates for the best defense; Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) and Jan Oblak (Atlético de Madrid) for best goalkeeper; Lluis Cortés (exBarcelona), Unai emery (Villarreal), Josep Guardiola (Manchester City) y Diego Pablo Simeone (Atlético de Madrid) for best coach.
Among the contenders for the best men’s soccer club are Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal, and for women, Barcelona, winner of the treble last season; and in that of sports director are Aitor ‘Txiki’ Begiristain and Roberto Olabe.
